Living the Simple Life
"Simplify, Simplify, Simplify"! has become my motto. It is all about handcrafted, organic, natural, frugal living that helps my family become more self-sufficient. It's about simplifying our lives to make time for the things that really matter...faith, family, friends, neighbors and service to others.

Patriotism
So what is your definition of patriotism? Yesterday, I experienced one definition. Yesterday, we enjoyed a nice, free dinner at the Golden Corral. It was Military Appreciation Monday, a tradition of the Golden Corral for the last eleven years. While there, we met a very nice woman who works there. She is probably one the most patriotic people I have ever met. Born in Iran, she came to the United States after many threats to her life due to her Christian faith in a Muslim nation. Six years ago, she became a legal citizen of America! What a pleasure and a privilege to meet her! I pray that those of us who were born here will have the same feelings of love and appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy!

Veterans Day!
This will be short and sweet. My husband's breathing problems are returning so it looks like yet another trip to the VA emergency room for us...sigh!
Remember to thank a veteran today for the service that they provided to our great country! Sometimes, as in my husband's case, a veteran's service has long term, life long effects on his or her life. A simple expression of thanks can go a long way in helping to ease the pain.
So what are your plans for the weekend? If I'm not at the hospital with hubby, I will be attending my Relief Society Super Saturday! I love Super Saturdays....they just don't happen often enough.
Until next, KISMIF!!

My Baby's Birthday and Musings!
Yesterday was my son's 17th birthday! I simply can't believe that my baby boy is 17! That means I have been living in Utah for 17 years...wow! We had a very nice day. Family lunch before Charles had to leave for work at Pizza Plus, an air hockey battle, bowling and haunted miniature golf. Being out from school for 5 days for fall break just added to the day!
The cooler autumn weather has been wonderful! It's nice to be able to get outside to do yard chores without feeling like I'm going to pass out from the heat. The one downside to the cooler weather...our chickens are not laying as many eggs each day. We are only averaging three eggs a day now, one from Licorice (our black sex link) and one each from Strawberry and Chestnut (our Rhode Island Reds).
Well, I'm off to crochet a washcloth. I joined a handmade soap swap group on www.ravelry.com We crochet or knit a washcloth then send it to our swap partner along with two bars of handmade soap, either of our own making or that we have purchased. I purchase my handmade soaps from a lovely Mennonite woman in Garland, UT. Her business is called Jewel Soap, named after goat that gives her the milk for her soaps.
Until next, KISMIF! (KEEP IT SIMPLE MAKE IT FUN!)

Contrasts
In addition to being a wife and mother, I work for the school district as a classroom aide in a Youth in Custody facility for teen boys. I have worked with at-risk teens going on 6 years now. The first two years were at the alternative high school; the other four year in youth-in-custody. It has been crazy, fulfilling, stressful and fun all at the same time. It has also been a learning experience.
Teenagers today have so many more temptations and other things in their lives that make it difficult to just be a kid. They are faced with an onslaught of media, drugs, alcohol, pornography, anti-religion advocates, and the list goes on and on. How do we, as parents and youth leaders, combat this?
This month's visiting teaching message for the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints provides the answer. It's very simple, really. It's this amazing thing called The Gospel! I'm inserting a picture of a handout I found on a wonderful website www.theideadoor.com You will notice that one of the tools listed is Family Meals! When I was at the alternative high school, a female student asked me if I made dinner for my family and if we sat down to dinner as a family. Naturally, I said "Yes". She than said, "Maybe if my mom made dinner once in a while and we ate together, I wouldn't have gotten into trouble.....". Lightbulb! Nuf said!

First Post!
Good Evening my friends! Well, here I go diving into this new adventure of blogging. This has been a long time coming but 2011 has been a very unusual year and that is what has prompted me to finally do this.
Life is interesting. We go about our daily activities, pretty much sticking to the same schedule and routine and then...WHAM! Heavenly Father throws us a curve ball...or two or three or more! It's how we take aim at those curve balls that will determine if we strike out or knock them out of the park.
Health issues, decreased hours at my husband's job, the challenging economic situation of the United States, the loss of my father....all of these things have prompted me to rethink what is important to myself and my family.
Life needs to be more simple and in turn, we need to return to the basics of homemaking and family life. Self-sufficiency centered on a strong faith in Heavenly Father and his son, Jesus Christ, is essential to simplifying our lives.
This blog will feature the efforts of my family on the road of provident living. I plan on sharing our experiences along with frugal living tips, recipes, favorite web sites, patterns for handcrafted items, and just plain fun stuff.
I hope you will join me on this journey!
